Vegan Guide to Gothenburg, Sweden
Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden and is located on the west coast. Gothenburg is known for the amusement park Liseberg, Music Festivals, Volvo and the Gothenburge archiplagos.
Why You Should Go: Gothenburg is a smaller city with a lot to offer. There is the amusement park of course but there is also many museums, unique restuarants, cool bars and beautiful scenery. It is especially fun to go island hopping around the archiplago.
Getting to Gothenburg: Ryan air often has very cheap flights from London Stansted to Gothenburg. We got our flights for £10 each which was a steal but we've seen them as low as £4.49 each. There is only one airport in Gothenburg (GOT) and the airport is about a 30 minute bus ride from the city centre. The public transit is very good in Gothenburg and a 3 day travel card includes buses, trams and ferries which is excellent for tourists. There is even the Gothenburg City Card that gets you free transit and admission to the theme park Liseburg and many of the museums.
How vegan friendly is it? Gothenburg has quite a few places with vegan options. There is 4 fully vegan places listed on Happy Cow, 16 vegetarian places and there are many veg friendly places as well. We happened to find a vegan store near our hotel, called Ecomelo. We happened upon vegan food a few times without having to actively search. There are vegan substitute products in the grocery stores and the liquour stores have vegan wine.
Blackbird Vegan Kok Och Bar: A punk metal bar with vegan beers on tap and a delicious vegan menu. It attracts a younger crowd, and is quite busy on a Friday night.
Restaurang Solrosen: This restaurant had a retro 1970's veggie vibe with it's decor and cafeteria style trays. It had very tasty food which you could order from the menu or get the salad bar. It's a lacto-ovo-vegetarian restaurant but there is lots of vegan options and all of the food we had was excellent.
Kelly's bar: Kelly's bar has some delicious vegan friendly pizza. They have about seven vegan pizzas to choose from as well as vegan burgers.
For more vegan options check out Happy Cow which has a comprehensive list of vegan, vegetarian and veg-friendly places to eat.
Sight Seeing: Take advantage of their tram system. It is amazing you can take the ferry boats to go island hopping. Also check out Bohus Fortress.

Where to stay: We stayed at Spar Hotel Majorna, was a great deal in that regard because free breakfast was included each morning and they had loads of vegan options. They had cereals, oat meal, nuts, seeds, raisins, oat milk, soya milk, coffee, teas, fresh fruit, fruit salad, juice, veggies, vegan pate, crackers and bread. We basically were able to fill up on breakfast everyday and that ended up making this trip a lot more affordable. We would definitely stay at that hotel again.

An Example of Vegan Food Available:
Open New Doors: Is a fully raw restaurant with amazing cakes. They only accept card which is good to note for tourists. It is located on the bridge going over the canal and has outdoor seating.

I find it really impressive how you manage to keep up your vegan diet while traveling, it must require a lot of homework! That being said, I would imagine Gothenburg and Sweden more generally to have a good choice of vegan options and that pizza looks particularly delicious. While I am a heartless meateater, this is some really great advice for people on a socially conscious diet
ReplyDeleteThanks, we did do a bit of homework. We used the website happy cow to find veg friendly places and our friend who used to live there showed us the pizza place.
DeleteI'm not one for a vegan diet but it's great you're following it on your travels. Gothenburg seems like a nice place and very Scandinavian (of course). I haven't been to Sweden yet but have been fascinated by the Scandinavian counties since my visit to Norway. Thanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoyed Sweden. We've been to Helsingborg as well. We want to go to Stockholm still.
DeleteGöteborg is a quite nice city. The diversity between the areas when walking around is something that we do not have here in Stockholm. Nice to see that you seem to have enjoyed your visit of Sweden, hope that you will return one day and see more of this country (well, it is recommended to wait 6 months until the winter is over) :)
ReplyDeleteYeah we definitely would like to see more of Sweden but like you said we'll wait until it's warmer.
DeleteWould be useful to read some info on what the prices of these restaurants are like. I know my immediate reaction to Scandinavia is usually, damn that's going to be one expensive travel.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good idea for next time. I do remember that alcoholic beverages were expensive. I bought a half pint of craft beer at a bar that cost 85 krona which is £7.50 or $13 CAD.
DeleteLooks like a beautiful place for both travel and food. The restaurants you recommend look fantastic. It's wonderful that there are so many vegan options
ReplyDeleteIt is a beatiful place with many great restaurants. We tried as many places as we could afford.
DeleteThese days I am reading a lot about Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. Sweden is the largest country of Scandinavia in terms of population and area. There is so much to see here - Dalarna ( Festivities & Tradition),Lapland (The midnight Sun & Northern Lights), Jamtland (Action & Relaxation), Smaland (fairy tales & handicrafts), Gotenborg (coast and culture), Stockholm (Capital city with lots of history). Your blog makes me want to rush there asap.
ReplyDeleteWe'd definitely recommend it.
DeleteThe place looks good.
ReplyDeleteVegan is something I haven't tried yet. May be if I get the opportunity I will taste but definitely don't wish to give up other diets over this.
Ferry boats seem to be an exciting option for me for sight seeing.
The ferry boats were really fun. As for the vegan food, don't knock it till you try it.
DeleteWe find it challenging to look for vegetarian restaurants and kudos to you for keeping up your vegan diet around Europe. Gothenburg looks like a beautiful quaint city with scenic landscapes. We would for sure not miss Open New Doors for those delicious looking cakes.
ReplyDeleteYeah there seems to be more and more vegan options everywhere. Europe has tons of vegan places. The happy cow app helps a lot to find them.
DeleteI'm off to Gothenburg next year as a stop on a tour of Sweden! Thanks for the info - it's very useful!
ReplyDeleteNo problem. Have fun.
DeleteGothenburg is definitely on our list. We will be visiting sweden next year. Loved your post.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Gothenburg is very nice indeed.
DeleteIt must be difficult traveling in Europe on a Vegan diet but equally impressive you manage to maintain it. Gothenburg looks like a nice little town. I'm so fascinated with the scandinavian countries and I wish to even settle there given a chance. They have so much to offer and everything looks simple. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThanks. We've had very little problem finding vegan food in Europe. Scandinavian countires seem like a nice place to settle but they are quite cold in the winter.
DeleteGotenberg looks so beautiful through your pictures. Its so awesome that you find vegan food in Europe. Indiana get so stressed trying to find vegetarian abroad. What are the vegan beers??
ReplyDeletehttp://www.barnivore.com/beer?region=Sweden That's a link to all the Swedish vegan beers. I cant remember which ones we had we didn't drink much. Black Bird has a vegan beers and food.
DeleteI love seeking out smaller, lesser known cities that aren't overrun with tourists. I haven't yet been to Sweden, but this looks like an intriguing place to visit!
ReplyDeleteYeah us too, although if we went in the summer it would probably be filled with tourists there for the amusement park.
DeleteGothenburg looks like a good quick getaway destination if you're just around Sweden. But I love how there's a quite of resto for vegan to look out for on that city. Nice post!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Ryan Air always has cheap flights to Gothenburg so it is woth checking out.
DeleteNice sights of gothenburg. One of the good things about your blog is that I always get to learn about every good place havng a vegan optiion. Most others wouldn't explore this aspect and reply in negative.
ReplyDeleteThanks we like showing where we ate to help other people find good places. Also we love eating.
DeleteGothenburg looks lovely! It seems like the city is quite vegan friendly as well! :) I would not be choosing a place based on the variety of the meals available yet it is great to read one can eat healthy even in Sveden! :)
ReplyDeleteThe main reason we went to Gothenburg was that the flights were only £10 with Ryan Air. Luckily it was a lot of fun there and pretty vegan friendly. Pretty much all of Europe is vegan friendly though except France. Haha.
DeleteThe food photos look delish! Never been to Sweden but this now makes me want to go!
ReplyDeleteYeah check it out if you get the chance.
