Backpacking Central Europe: Bad Hofgastein, Austria

Travel Diary

Day 8-9:

We woke up in Innsbruck and checked out of our hotel. We had some soya milk and cereal that we ate in the hotel for breakfast. We headed to the train station and found the correct platform which was easier to find than we thought.

We could have used some tea and coffee but we decided to wait.

The train ride was pretty amazing.
We went past a big lake.

We had to wait half an hour for our connecting train at Schwarzach St. Veit Bahnhof.
We finally arrived in Bad Hofgastein
We hopped on a bus with everyone that got off the train in Bad Hofgastein since the town centre was a ways away from the station.

We stopped at Hofer which is the supermarket and this was the view outside.
We got some food at the supermarket and walked to our hotel guided by Google maps. We downloaded offline maps on Google maps for use when we had no wifi.

The walk into town was nice and we enjoyed the scenery and cool buildings.

We checked into our hotel and it had an excellent view. I'm not sure we could afford this place if it wasn't the off season.

We bopped around town taking pictures.

Snow on the ground!
The air was really fresh and the sky was clear so we could see all the mountains around us very clearly.

The park we walked into had a lot of ducks so we had some fun hanging out with the ducks and taking pictures of them.

There were some Christmas decorations starting to go up around town and there was hot water fountains all over the place to warm up your hands.

We packed it in for the night.

The hotel included breakfast so we got some toast, fruit, coffee, tea, and there was vegan butter surprisingly.

The next day we decided to walk to the train station as it wasn't really a far walk at all. It was really foggy and we weren't able to see the mountains so we lucked out being able to see them the day before.

The walk to the station was pleasant.

We had fun saying Bad Hofgastein over and over as it is a fun place name to say.

It was really foggy. There is mountains back there but you can't see them.
The train station was a cool old building. There was only 2 platforms so pretty easy to figure out where our train was.
We made a short video of Bad Hofgastein. We hope it makes you feel like you were there!

The fog started to go away and we could see the mountains a little bit.
Our train went up into the mountains some more and we were travelling back into a winter wonderland.

Our train made it through the mountains and we got off near the Austrian boarder.

We boarded a coach and made our way to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Our third country in this trip.

We got to Ljubljana and it was great being in a little city filled with amazing architecture, and vegan restaurants!

  5. Everything is so better during offseason. The idea of hot water fountains in this freezing weather would have been ideal. Waiting to read about your Slovenia trip now.

    1. Thanks. Yeah we like how good the travel deals are during the off season. If you can afford it though, there is usually a lot more going on during the peak season. It depends on what you like doing.

  7. I recently watched a video you guys had put together about Bad Hofgastein and as I mentioned there, the mountains really are spectacular and trains are a great way to first experience a place. Having been to Innsbruck before, I can attest to how beautiful it is albeit I went during a much warmer time of the year. Another nice post with the customary beautiful photographs
