Packing For a Two Year Adventure

Today's post is "What we packed to move for two years"

We packed two medium size suitcases and two regular sized backpacks and set off to England for two years. We basically packed the essentials. We made sure not to overfill our bags as we know we will be taking more stuff back to Canada with us.

What we packed:

  • two weeks worth of clothes each. (2 pairs of pants, 10 shirts, 14 underwear, 14 socks, (2 bras), pair of shorts, bathing suit, belt, 2 sweaters, jacket, dress, flipflops, shoes, toque)
  • 2 towels, 3 pillow cases, 1 book, journal, kindle, small laptop, sunglasses, reading glasses, notebook, medications, ipods, 1 cellphone, converters for the UK and Europe, chargers, camera, documents for doing Canadian taxes next year, barbering scissors and combs, french dictionary, water bottle, tea tumbler,
  • Toiletries (Toothbrush, toothpaste, tweezers, nail clippers, nail file, polysporin, safety pin, lotion, shampoo bar, brush, deodorant, hair elastics, feminine products, )

What we bought when we got here:

  • 1 cellphone, mini speaker, conditioner, soap, hair products, clippers (plug and currency is different in England than Canada), heatpack, bedding, kitchen nonsense, business attire,

What we bought for fun:

  • selfie stick, luggage scale, portable charger, runners,

What we forgot:

  • Baseball hats, crochet hook,

Hopefully our packing list is helpful for other people who want to move abroad and pack lightly.

  2. I got a little thrill out of noticing that you'd forgotten a crochet hook. When I was little, I begged my grandmother until she taught me to crochet, and I've made lots of things since then. I don't know any other yarn crafters in real life though, so it always gives me a jolt to encounter someone else who likes it.

  3. That is really helpful! I am terrible at overpacking and I feel like I would have overpacked for a 2 year trip!

  5. It's definitely important to have the clothes that you need and some extra. I like that you packed just the essentials and just purchased what you needed when you got there. It saves so much space and you have less to carry.

  6. I remember when I moved to the UK from Finland - I had one suitcase with a weeks worth of clothes and a toothbrush. That's it. That's all I had. And it definitely wasn't enough. I'd do it all differently next time :D

    1. We thought two weeks would be sufficient. It was for us. That is still all we have.

  7. I can't packed that little and with only 2 suitcases. I had a lot of personal things to bring and my clothes were too many and I can't afford to leave them and not wearing it for two years. lol

  8. This is a great list. I love the idea of being an expat but it'll have to wait a bit until our kids finish college. Gotta keep them whole in state tuition.

  12. Wow! Two suitcases each for a two year adventure is amazing! I like to travel light but always pack things I do not use in the end.

    1. Everybody is different. We just find we like to travel light, so we need to pack the bare minimum.
